Overview

Mackenzie Almassian is an associate in Foster Swift’s Municipal Law Practice Group in the firm’s Grand Rapids office. She advises municipalities and public entities on a broad range of legal matters, including governance issues, day-to-day municipal operations, ordinance drafting, contract review and negotiation, code enforcement, zoning disputes, and municipal litigation. Mackenzie also supports public-sector projects and assists clients in navigating complex regulatory and administrative matters.

One of Mackenzie’s favorite aspects of municipal law is the opportunity to work with communities throughout Michigan. She enjoys getting to know the people, places, and local character that make each municipality unique.

Mackenzie earned both her undergraduate and law degrees from Michigan State University. She received her B.A. in Comparative Cultures and Politics from Michigan State’s James Madison College before earning her J.D. from Michigan State University College of Law. During law school, she participated in the Michigan State Law Review, Moot Court, and the Great Lakes First Amendment Clinic. She received a Best Oral Advocate Award at a national moot court competition and earned Jurisprudence Awards in the First Amendment Clinic and Labor & Employment Law.

"Growing up in a family of lawyers, Mackenzie initially believed the legal profession was “not for me.” It was not until her senior year of college, after realizing she enjoyed reading, writing, and debating, that she recognized she may have accidentally described the practice of law."

While attending MSU College of Law, she was a part of the Michigan State Law Review, Moot Court, and Great Lakes First Amendment Clinic.

  • Received a Best Oral Advocate Award at a national Moot Court Competition
  • Jurisprudence Awards in: First Amendment Clinic and Labor & Employment Law

Outside of work, Mackenzie enjoys keeping up with the latest true crime documentaries, checking out the newest restaurants, and tracking down the perfect vintage find.

She was featured as a Co-Author in the publication Algorithms, Addiction, and Adolescent Mental Health: An Interdisciplinary Study to Inform State-level Policy Action to Protect Youth from the Dangers of Social Media, American Journal of Law & Medicine, (Feb 12, 2024).
